Dhavan V. Shah is the Louis A. & Mary E. Maier-Bascom Professor at the University of Wisconsin, where he is Director of the Mass Communication Research Center (MCRC) and Scientific Director in the Center for Health Enhancement System Studies (CHESS). Shah’s research focuses on the influence of conventional and digital media on social judgments, civic engagement, and health support, centering on: (1) the influence of message construction and processing on social evaluations, judgments and behaviors; (2) the capacity of mass and interpersonal communication, especially in online communities, to shape civic engagement, political participation, and social trust; and (3) the effects of computer-mediated interactions, especially online support expression, on the management of cancer, aging, and addiction. This work has been supported by over $40 million in funding from private foundations (e.g., Ford, Carnegie, Knight, Russell Sage), large public entities (e.g., Public Broadcasting Service, Corporation for Public Broadcasting), and the federal government (e.g., National Science Foundation, National Cancer Institute, National Institute for Drug Abuse). Shah’s primary appointment is in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, with joint appointments in Industrial and Systems Engineering, Marketing, and Political Science.
